How it all began
Way back in 1824 in London the Reverend Arthur Broome wished to launch a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. One of his associates was William Wilberforce the Hull M.P.
RSPCA Hull & East Riding Branch has been established since the early 1900’s starting in a house on Beverley Road and eventually moving to the Clough Road site.
Over the years we have cared for and rehabilitated thousands upon thousands of animals and wildlife of various kinds. We look after a variety of species, though most are companion animals such as dogs, cats and rabbits.
We do sometimes have other small furries e.g. mice, rats, guinea pigs and hamsters, we sometimes have birds, reptiles, fowl and wildlife. We are always looking for caring homes for these animals. The staff at the centre are on hand to give help, advice and guidance, and our hard working team of home visitors do an excellent job making sure that prospective adopters understand their responsibilities when taking new animals into the home. An important aspect of our work is supporting the Inspectors, providing accommodation for rescue animals, which very often need nursing back to good health before they can be re-homed.
It is a sad fact of life that the numbers of rescued animals always take up a large part of our animal accommodation. Some of them are in a terrible condition when they arrive. They receive veterinary treatment and a lot of TLC from the staff. Some of these animals stay with us for many months as it can take a long time for a court case to be completed. Whether it is an injured rabbit, an unwanted kitten, a rescued dog or any other animal, the reward for the staff is to see animals they have looked after happily re-settled.
