Caring for pets

Prioritising animals in need

Our highest priority is to help those animals most in need, which are those that are rescued by the RSPCA Inspectors having been identified as sick, injured, neglected or victims of cruelty.

There are many reasons these days as to why you may have to part with your pet and we ask that you consider your decision carefully. It maybe that a little advice or a change in lifestyle or environment can make all the difference in making your decision. If you would like to contact us for advice please phone  on 01482 341331 and we can supply details of the help available.

By focussing on the animals who most need our help, we have the resources to care for the animals that most need our care. Our core aims are to prevent animals from suffering due to a lack of accommodation and care, by providing our facilities for those most in need.

Please contact the animal centre before bringing an animal to us to ensure that we have the facilities to care for it. If we cannot help we have the information of other charities that could be in a better position than ourselves to assist you. Our first priority has to be the most vulnerable animals and we will endeavour to help you if we can.

This country is suffering from a major cat explosion and we have to prioritise the intake of cats to sick and injured strays, abandoned kittens, pregnant stray females and cats brought in from our Inspectors and Animal Collection Officers. We also have space problems for rabbits and can only take in strays.

It would be wonderful to take in more animals but space is limited, as we have built on every available inch of land at the Animal Centre.

Taking your dog or cat abroad

It is now possible to take your dog or cat on holiday to some other countries without the worry of quarantine on your return. To obtain your pet passport your pet must be micro chipped first, then vaccinated and have a blood test. These two stages must be completed six months before you travel. We offer microchipping at only £15. Telephone 01482 341331 for an appointment,we also have leaflets on the Pets Passport.

Euthanasia

At some stage in your pet’s life it may be necessary to make the heartbreaking decision to have your pet put to sleep. Unfortunately we have had to withdraw our euthanasia service and if your pet requires this service we recommend contacting your local veterinary surgery.

Welfare neutering

This branch provides financial assistance for homeowners and tenants who receive either Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Rebate. Together with Hull City Dog Wardens, we are running a neutering scheme, so if you would like to obtain neutering for your dog, are in receipt of these benefits and live within the Hull City boundary, please telephone them on 01482 300300.

If you are a dog owner within the East Riding area, in receipt of benefit, to obtain help towards neutering, call at the Animal Home for your voucher; any day Tuesday to Sunday, 11.00 am – 3.30 pm. Please bring proof of benefit and I.D. showing your name and address.

For cat owners in the Hull and East Riding area call at the Animal Home. Same times as above and with I.D. and proof of benefit.

We do restrict the vouchers to three animals per household.

Dog Training by the Dog Listeners

Dog Listeners Karen Park and Sue Winters have introduced a different style of training for the dogs in the centre. It is simple and effective, yet involves no pain, no force and no special gadgets.

The training is based on a system introduced by Jan Fennell who is an author of several books and has appeared on television many times demonstrating her skill. Karen and Sue teach how to communicate with the dogs in a way that is easily understood and benefits the animals.

If you would like more information on the Dog Listeners please contact the centre on 01482 341331.
