Rehoming
Adoption Procedures
First of all visit the Animal Centre and if you see an animal you like you will be given the opportunity to play with it. If you wish to adopt the animal you will be asked to complete a questionnaire and the animal will be reserved for you. Please bring some I.D.
We always have dogs, cats and rabbits and we sometimes have ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, birds, chickens and ducks. We carry out home visits for dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, chickens, ducks, birds going into aviaries and for some other animals as necessary, (see ‘What Happens Next’)
For small animals such as mice, hamsters and gerbils you can take the animal home with you straight away as long as you bring a suitable cage for it to live in when you visit the centre.
Our animals are kept at the Centre until re-homed. They are not put to sleep unless they are very ill or totally unsuitable for re-homing. Veterinary advice is always taken for anything like this.
Current prices:
- Dogs £99, Cats £69. These prices include neutering, microchipping, vaccinating, fleaing, worming and 4 weeks petplan insurance.
- Rabbits £10.00 each or 2 Rabbits for £15.00 this includes neutering and vaccinating against Myxomatosis.
- Small Animals from £2.
What Happens Next?
Once an animal is reserved a Home Visitor will contact the prospective owner, within 3 days, to make arrangements for a home visit. We visit your home to make sure, for the animal and adopter, that everything is satisfactory before the adoption takes place. What we try to prevent is for the animal to be returned to the Animal Home.
You will be given advice as to what pet products you will need for your pet and be provided with information if you are a first time owner.
The Re-homing Co-ordinator is given details of the home visit and if everything is satisfactory the animal is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped if appropriate.
A member of the Centre staff telephones the owner and an appointment is made to collect their pet, hopefully the next day.
Circumstances can change and if you find that you must part with your pet, e.g. emigration or incapacity, we will take back your adopted pet and re-home it again, depending on individual circumstances.
Microchipping
If you have a pet and you would like it to be microchipped please phone 01482 341331 to make an appointment. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is permanent; we do promote this procedure, which is painless. If you are unfortunate and your pet is lost the dog wardens, vets, RSPCA Inspectors, and ourselves all scan any animal which comes into our possession. If microchipped the details of the owner are registered on a computer and your pet can be speedily returned to you. The cost for microchlpping is £15.
